‘Tipping Point’ and ‘Here Today, Gone Tomorrow’ 2022

This project consisted of two installations, that combine kinetic sculpture and environmental art. They focus primarily on man’s presence amongst nature and how our destructive behaviors are leading us to extinction. The idea behind each artwork is the same, and both rely on audience engagement, but within each, different materials were used. In my research I noted how a shocking or in some way negative experience within the perception and interpretation of an artwork, can sometimes have a greater impact on an audience than one that is aesthetically pleasing or considered ‘beautiful’. With a rise of performance art of during the 1970s, the ‘aesthetics of shock’ became an important quality of art practices and with my own artworks, it was important to create an uncomfortable experience to almost force the audience into a greater state of reflection. Making them question their choices, our behavioral patterns and how we are so easily lead by one another. There was a sadness that came with the broken artworks, but also a strange excitement that came to many from being destructive. These behavioral outcomes brought to light a consequential truth.
